Visiting Syros

This is a travel photostory from the beautiful island of Syros. The capital of Cyclades islands. It’s the first destination of a hopping island adventure in the Cyclades in September of 2021.

How I get there

My journey started from my home city Thessaloniki in early September. The travel and tourist industry had a harsh hit from Covid19 and fewer people had the opportunity to travel. So here we are. I found a cheap flight from Thessaloniki to Mykonos and then I would get the line ship to my destination Syros.

Ano Syros

When I was planning this trip I did my research for all the potential places should I visit. Ano Syros is one of these places. Birthplace of Marcos Vamvakaris, one of the greatest musicians in Greek history. Beautiful alleys, monasteries with a long history and amazing view spots.

Cats of Ano Syros

As you walk in the alleys of Ano Syros you will see a lot of cats. There is a special connection between these animals and the locals. People take care of them. You see water and cat food outside their homes so these little guys can have what they need.

Capuchin Monastery

The Capuchin Monastery is located in Ano Syros and is dedicated to Saint John. It was founded in 1653 by King Louis XIII of France and currently, there are no monks in the monastery, except the abbot. Situated close to the Jesuit Monastery, it is a fact that these two monasteries have played an important role in the religious and social life of the inhabitants where schools and hospitals were established.

The Capuchin Monastery hosts the church of Agios Ioannis, dating from 1635. In the basement of this church, there are crypts that were used as shelters during pirate raids. Later on, after 1896, they were used to house the bones and the tombstones belonging to the old Catholic families. The monastery has many adits and basements to explore.

THEATER APOLLON

The historic Theater Apollon is one of the major attractions of Syros and constitutes an emblem of the island’s cultural heritage. Created in 1864 by the Italian architect Pietro Sampo who was inspired by 4 stunning Italian standards including the Scala di Milano.

Moments in Syros

The best way to see a place is to walk around and explore the neighborhoods. Here are some street photography moments.

Town Hall of Syros

The Town Hall of Ermoupolis on Miaouli square is the largest and most impressive Town Halls in all of Greece. That Τown Ηall was built in 1876 under the supervision of Ernst Ziller, the architect who also designed the Greek Parliament.

Little Venice

Sunrise in Little Venice area in Syros. My favorite place on the island.

Port of Syros

As the sun has set and the city lights start to shine the view from the Port of Syros is amazing.

It’s time to say goodbye

My stay in Syros is about to end. I liked this place. I wish I had more days to visit also the rest of the island. Maybe some other time. Now it’s about time to continue my island hopping. It’s early morning in the port of Syros. Waiting for my ship to Naxos. I would have few hours to see as much as I can and then I m to going to continue to my next destination. The Small Cyclades.
